Zadar Archipelago

The main characteristic of the Mediterranean climate is light winters, dry and warm summers . Average air temperature during the year is over 15°C , average air temperature during the warmest summer month of July is 24°C and in the coldest month of January 25°C. The number of days with temperature of 0°C is very low and there are about 16 days during the year with extremely high temperature. Air temperature in the most coldest winter month of January isn't lower than -3°C. Sunny days are also one of the most important characteristics of the climate of Ugljan and Pasman archipelago. Average number of yearly sunny hours is about 2.500 and in July there are 10-12 sunny hours per day. Kukljica has on average 106 days of clear sky . Cloudiness acts depressively on people, thus the element of sun exposure is of greatest importance for the tourists, which makes it a determinant element for choosing a vacation destination.

Snow is extremely rare in Kukljica and on both islands, because air temperature rarely falls under 0°C. The northeastern wind is the strongest and it hits mostly the east coast of the island. The south wind or the refreshing landward breeze usually hit the west coast of the island. The northeastern wind, the south wind and the landward breeze are typical of the Zadar County. The frequency of the northeastern wind is highest during fall, winter and spring. The north wind is strongest in January, while the south wind dominates during the fall.
Because of the position of Kukljica in a closed harbour with southeastern orientation, with the background of high vegetation that protects the village from the Velebit range, the influence of the north wind is not felt in Kukljica. The entrance to the harbour, next to the bay of Zdrelascica, is completely protected, even during the strongest north winds.

AVERAGE MONTHLY SEA TEMPERATURE (°C)
I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI XII Year.
10,9 10,8 11,3 12,91 16,6 20,4 22,3 22,7 21,0 18,0 15,3 12,3 16,2

Sea temperatures throughout fall, winter and first days of spring are higher then air temperatures. The cooling effect of the sea is appreciated during the hottest days of the year. The sea does not warm up as fast as the coast, but looses warmth much slower, so that during winter times the sea is the reservoir of warmth that heats the air. Consequently, winters are lighter and warmer then on the coastal part of Zadar County. Average sea temperature during the year (12°C) is higher than average air temperature (14,12°C) . Minimum sea temperature is 10.8°C in February and maximum sea temperature 22.12°C in August. If we take that the sea temperature of 12°C is pleasant for bathing, then the bathing season in Kukljica could last up to 126 days, from the first week of June to the second week in October.

Flora and fauna

The gentle climate of the green islands of Ugljan-Pasman archipelago is seen in its richness of plant types. Because of the typical climate plants from the South can be grown. Here grow agaves, palm trees, cypress, mirth and mimosa, fig trees, lemon and mandarin trees. Vegetation is typical Mediterranean, with some preserved pine forest, mostly on the uninhabited Southwestern shore. The rest is mainly covered with Mediterranean scrub forest (makija) and partly with olive trees. Only a small part is used for agriculture, mainly vegetable production, especially on the far north of Ugljan, with only larger flat areas on the archipelago. Thick pinewoods around Kukljica became the green belt that protects the village and the harbour from the north wind. Today the thick pinewoods of Kukljica are the symbol of both island and a valuable asset in its tourist development. The vegetation on the islands is growing luxuriant during all seasons and the state of vegetation makes the climate better. The culmination of vegetation is in the springtime when most plants flourish. The most beautiful months on the islands are from March until June, because of the mild temperatures, richness of flourishing vegetation and the aromatic scents in the air.

Flora
i It is very particular that on the Ugljan-Pasman archipelago there are no vipers, even though there are snakes and lizards. On the island there is small game (wild rabbits) and lots of feathered game (settled pheasant), while from the birds of prey here live the falcon and the hawk. Among the farm animals the most spread are goats. Because of the indebtedness the sea that waters the coastline of the island is extremely rich with plant and animal life. Endless currents between the bays give the sea special clearness and limpidness, cleanliness and sheerness. In our seas live different types of fish and crabs, mussels, snails and different types of marine flora. Possidonia oceanica is the excellent biological witnesses of the state of our seas in which it lives.
